GENERATION UNITS AND THE LIFE COURSE: A SOCIOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE ON YOUTH AND THE ANTI-WAR MOVEMENT1 This research examines Mannheim s theory of generational politics as it predicts political activism in a sample of California participants in the antiVietnam war movement (N=131) who were members of the youngest generation of a larger study (N=827) of Three Generation Families. The purpose of this paper is to test Mannheim s theory of generations by estimating the relative influence of intergenerational continuity, generational consciousness and generational experiences in predicting participation in demonstrations for peace during the Vietnam era in the United States. Those with greater generational consciousness (as measured by political attitude and identification with the younger generation) were more likely to participate. More than two decades have passed since the unrest at Kent State University on May 4, 1970 which marked a turning point in a period of large-scale protests against the war in Vietnam and the bombing of Cambodia. It has been estimated that almost 50 percent of all college students participated in campus protests during late spring of 1970 (Gitlin, 1987; Lipset Ladd, 1972; Wood, 1974). Many of the participants in the anti-war movement were young adults who provided rank-and-file members as well as leadership for the movement. The strong representation of young adults in the anti-war movement is typical of many social movements throughout history. Many researchers who have studied the student movements of the 1960s have used the theoretical grounding provided by Karl Mannheim (1928/1972) in his essay “The Problem of Generations.” The purpose of this paper is to test Mannheims theory of generations by estimating the relative influence of intergenerational continuity, generational consciousness and generational experiences in predicting participation in demonstrations for peace during the Vietnam era in the United States. Mannheim states that generation is a social location that has the potential to affect an individuals consciousness in much the same way as social class. He describes an intersection between biology and society (Pilcher, 1994) in that “individuals who belong to the same generation, who share the same year of birth, are endowed, to that extent, with a common location in the historical dimension of the social process” (Mannheim, 1928/1972:105).

Bullying in organizations has become one the prime social phenomena which can have a direct as well as indirect impact on the productivity of employees and managers. While bullying is a part of the fabric of society, the rate of occurrence as well as the severity of bullying acts in the workplace is alarming. This paper puts forth a model that illustrates the triangular relationship and interaction between the three components in the bullying event: 1) the organizational environment and its impact on the occurrence of bullying activities; 2) the characteristics of those that bully; and 3) the characteristics of those being bullied (e.g., victims of bullying). These three interrelated issues form the triangle of bullying that is examined in this paper. This paper posits that a major source of many of the personnel relational problems faced in the workplace between coworker and coworker or manager and employees comes from bullies, just like the ones experienced on the childhood playground. Research shows that child bullies and those bullied as children have the potential to become adult bullies. Combine that with the complex, diverse, global business arena that creates high levels of stress, it is easy to understand why there is the possibility of boardroom/workplace bullies. “Bullying at work is claimed to be more crippling and devastating problem for employees than all other work related stress put together.” (Einarsen, 1999). As an adult, I am significantly less concerned for my physical well-being relative to modern day terrorists, than I was with Steven and he did not have access to nuclear or biological weapons of mass destruction! For many adults, there is a Steven in their work places. One who strikes fear in their hearts that develops into significant levels of stress. The unfortunate reality is that bullying is moving from the playground of our childhood, to the offices and boardrooms of our adult business arenas. Questions about this social phenomenon, as it appears in a business context need to be asked. Why are bullying acts occurring more frequently? What can be done to address bullying in the workplace? Bullying (i.e., repeated acts and practices that are directed deliberately or unconsciously, but clearly cause humiliation, offence and distress, and that interfere with job performance and/or cause an unpleasant work environment {Einarsen, 1999}) is typically proactive and frequently involve a continuous process of badgering the victim (Rayner Cooper, 1997). There are a number of historic business leaders who are described in the annuals of business as management tyrants and/or bullies (e.g., John D. Rockefeller, Henry Clay Frick, and Henry Ford).

The National Aquarium in Baltimore will operate the National Aquarium in D.C., providing new resources in educational programming, animal care, and exhibit design and development under an agreement announced yesterday. National Aquarium of Baltimore officials say they expect to secure variable rate bonds worth $14 million this week, which will help them finance their $112 million, seven-year expansion and renovation effort. This is the first time the aquarium has obtained financing of this nature. The bonds will be sold through Suntrust Capital Markets. “This is just the beginning,” said the aquariums spokeswoman, Andrea Butler, on the nonprofits fundraising campaign. According to Bruce Hoffberger, the aquarium s senior director of finance and administration, the popular tourist attraction expects to raise additional funds through soliciting donations through private capital campaigns, the state and city, and the aquariums own operating cash flow. The aquarium was able to secure $20 million in fixed-rate, tax- exempt bonds on June 11, which were sold through Legg Mason Wood Walker Inc. and Salomon Smith Barney.

Depending upon who is telling the story, the Endangered Species Act (ESA) (1) is either the “pit bull of environmental laws” (2) or a political fig leaf providing cover for business as usual. (3) Those differing views are mirrored by opinions about the scientific underpinnings of the Act and its implementation. Environmentalists insist that political considerations lead the United States Fish Wildlife Service and NOAA Fisheries, the two federal agencies responsible for implementing the ESA, to ignore science in favor of development, while the regulated community sees precisely the opposite problem. (4) Both supporters and opponents of the ESA are intent on gaining the scientific high ground. In part, that desire undoubtedly stems from the Act itself, which requires that a number of key decisions rest upon the best available scientific information. (5) But it goes deeper than that. Scientific victory seems to hold the key to political victory. Both sides seem convinced that public opinion turns on whether, and to what extent, science supports the decisions of the agencies responsible for implementing the ESA. There is good reason to think that this assumption is accurate. As a society, we hunger for objective, rule-based decision making, especially when the decision pits human interests against those of another species. We worry that decisions lacking a firm, objective basis may be arbitrary, wholly “political,” wholly dependent upon the whims of the particular decision maker, or made on the basis of improper motivations. We look to “science” to provide the objectivity we crave. The demand for strong scientific support of ESA decisions will only grow in the future, as the costs of conservation measures become higher and more apparent. (6) Science, however, is not as objective or neutral a basis for decisions as we might hope. In recent years, the uncertainties and gaps in the supposedly “scientific” decision making of the ESA have become increasingly apparent, and increasingly the source of controversy and contention. (7) At the same time, several reviews have strongly endorsed the use of science in making decisions under the ESA. (8) That juxtaposition suggests that different observers are looking for different things from the use of science in these decisions. The controversies raise important questions about how science is actually being used, what we are seeking from science, what we are actually getting from it, and what we should realistically expect.

Pull out nails and any other obstructions from the back of the door. You may want to sand the back lightly to smooth the surface so the mirror will mount flush. One possible health outcome that may be adversely affected by intentional weight loss is immune function. Natural killer (NK) cells, a subset of mononuclear cells, which are an important component of the immune system, lack antigen-specific receptors and are capable of killing cancer cells and virus-infected cells. The aim of a cross-sectional study was to investigate history of intentional weight loss and associations with NK cytotoxicity and lymphocyte subpopulations among healthy, overweight, postmenopausal women. It was hypothesized that repeated intentional weight loss may be associated with lower immune function measures. The subjects (n=114) were a subset of a female study population recruited for an exercise intervention trial. The subjects had to meet the following criteria: postmenopausal, age 50 to 75 years, in good health; sedentary; nonsmoking; and had been at a stable body weight for at least 3 months. Body weight and height was measured. The subjects completed a questionnaire that included the following question: “Within the last 20 years, when you were not pregnant or sick, did you ever lose 10 pounds or more on purpose?” In other questions, women were queried regarding how often they had lost between 120 lb and 19 lb, between 20 lb and 49 lb, 50 lb or more, and how long they had been within 10 lb of their current weight. Demographic information was obtained. Food frequency questionnaires were used to assess dietary intake and alcohol consumption. The use of nutritional supplements was ascertained. Flow cytometry was used to measure NK cytotoxicity at four effector-to-target (E:T) ratios and four enumerating phenotyping lymphocytes. Multiple linear regression was used to investigate associations between weigh loss within the past 20 years and current immune function. Women who reported ever intentionally losing > 10 lbs were found to have lower measured NK cytotoxicity than those who did not (24.7% [+ or -] 12.1% vs. 31.1% [+ or -] 14.7%, respectively, at E:T 25:1; P = .01). Additionally, increasing frequency of previous intentional weight loss was associated with lower NK cytotoxicity (P = .003, trend). As an independent predictor, longer duration of recent weight stability was associated with higher NK cytotoxicity (21.6% [+ or -] 11.9%, 24.4%[+ or -] 11.0%, and 31.9%[+ or -] 14.4% for <2,>2 to <5, and >5 years of weight stability, respectively; P = .0002, trend). The frequency of weight loss episodes was also associated with differences in the number and proportion of NK cells.
